Toddler’s Speech and Developmental Milestones

Our favorite pedia, Dra. Vienne Saulog says that Cyler has a good and bright memory considering that he’s not even two years old. At this point of his life he already knew so many things like numbers (he can count now from 1-30!),human body parts, alphabets, objects, and animal sounds. He can now construct two to three words like “open the door” although he’s still on bulol phase. And his still sociable just like before, wag mo nga lang patatawanin kasi mabibigo ka lang. He rarely smile to strangers although sumasama naman siya. Madali nga daw makidnap especially when he hears the magic word “bye!” because he loves going outside the house. Kung may Dora the Explorer, si Cyler ata ung nawawalang kapatid nya. LOL! Certified lakwatsero ang bagets! Oh well kanino pa ba magmamana? Hihi We told Docky that Cyler is musically inclined too. We always hear him singing or humming even without the music. Doc Vienne didn’t require Cyler to go on a toddler school since he’s developmental milestones are really fast. But she suggested that if we want Cyler to develop more his music skills then we can enroll him to a toddler music class when he reach two. So we are planning to enroll him in either Gymboree or Kindermusic maybe after his 2nd Birthday, we are still undecided though. Both toddler school are really really good (based on my fellow moms review) that’s why it’s kinda hard for us to decide. But we’ll see.

Who knew that something so simple could be so much fun for the little ones? My little Mr. Curious guy get so amazed and giddy everytime he hears the sounds of the animals. Last month, he learned how to mimic the sounds of the animals. His favorite among all the animal sounds? The growling sound of the Bear– RAWR!

Doc Vienne kept on telling to us that we are on the right track because despite of our hectic schedule still we we’re able to teach our toddler. Well technically, it’s not only us who taught him those things. Like the alphabets he learned that from watching Brainy Baby, he learned counting from watching Charlie and the Numbers, he learned the animal sounds from a particular app which I don’t remember the name already, BUT we constantly teaching him how to say those words over and over again until he get it right. See it’s not only us who influence’s our child, TV and gadgets can really influence your child too. Nowadays, modern technology becomes your parenting partner (agree mommies?), whether we like it or not, children of today are going to be involved with technology. Gadget aims to help entertain our toddlers especially while you’re doing household chores or work, and it also helps your child’s developmental milestones but I’m not saying that Television and gadgets are a good source of learning, still everything has to be on moderation. Too much use of gadgets can isolate your child from the real world. I’m no expert in parenting but I’m saying this based on my own and real experience. I bet every parents can relate to me.

Our pedia always tell us that the more we talk to our child, the more they learn. So for those mommies who keep on asking me what’s secret and how did my toddler learn those things? My answer– constant communication with your child is the number one key to your childs milestones. And also make learning a fun time for your toddler. So make it a habit, talk to your child even though he/she is not yet talking. Just say anything and be constant, you’ll be surprise one day your baby is mimicking what you’re saying. Remember, parents are the first and most enduring educators of their children. 🙂

Cyler’s Intellectual and Cognitive Development: Toddler Milestones

Watching your kids grow up is sort of bittersweet; but it happens so fast. If feels like he suddenly aged in a millisecond.  And now that time was rapidly approaching for this child. I’m having a flashback to the first time I saw my baby and cuddle him, and it seems like a blink of an eye, one minute I am holding his hand to help him walk, and now his opting to walk on his own. Oh my, can’t imagine how time flies! Can I pause it for a seconds?! Oops! I’m sorry I’m just reminiscing here.

Anyhoo, we visited Doc Vienne a week ago for Cyler’s monthly check-up. A trip to Doc Vienne’s clinic for the monthly check up is like a day in school for me. I learned so much from her, every month she would ask for Cyler’s milestones and she answered all my worries and concerns.  When we got off the elevator, Cyler let go of my hand and ran ahead of me. I didn’t stop him but I kept a close distance from him so I can run after him if he makes a wrong turn or would enter a different doctor’s clinic. He stopped on the first door (the door before Doc Vienne’s clinic) for about 5 seconds and he had this curious look, and I was surprised because he didn’t went inside. He usually go inside the wrong doctor’s clinic every time we go there and this time he turned on the right corner and went inside the right door. I told Docky about these and she is also surprised. She said that Cyler’s intellectual/cognitive skills is developing well.

Cyler with Dra. Vienne Saulog

I also told her that Cyler memorized the entire alphabet already and can count from 1 to 10 now. She was really happy and surprised for Cyler. She said that Cyler has a good memory and a really smart toddler. She told me that Continue reading

Healthy Snacks for Toddlers

When Cyler was still a little baby he tends to eat fruits and veggies but when he entered the toddler stage he started to become more picky on what he eats. Our pedia, Dra.Vienne Saulog says that food fads and fussy eater behaviors are common in young children, particularly to toddlers.Toddlers often develop more finicky, or discriminating, tastes as they grow up because this is their way of expressing independence. She says that it’s normal to most toddlers, but really frustrating for many parents. So, finding ways to “healthify” his favorite cookies/snacks is one of my biggest challenge as a parent. I want to ensure that he get the fruits and vegetables he need.

Of course my family’s health is my top priority among others. But there are times when I get tired of trying to play guessing games on what he wants to eat everyday. Just to find out nothing. We completely weaned him from drinking Mosegor-Vita and he’s back to being a fussy-eater now. He has outgrown our TV trick. We also tried to sit together at the table, but it doesn’t work too! Feeding toddlers healthy foods can be a lot like playing an endless game of hide-and-seek — there’s their appetite…and now, it’s gone! Yes, it’s frustrating, really frustrating but that’s how it goes, and this is just one of my dilemmas as a mom.

My son, Cyler would rather eat cookies/snacks than to eat the real food, and so I started looking for some healthy snacks that will support the needs of his body. Doc Vienne also told us that as long as his healthy and he doesn’t get sick then there’s no need to worry. Being picky on what they eat doesn’t necessarily means that they don’t get enough nutrition says Dra.Vienne. But there are times when I can’t help it. That is why I started looking for nutritious snacks for my picky tot.

Here’s some healthy snacks for toddlers:

How to Deal with Picky-Eater Toddler

His first solid food. Cyler was six months old here.

Many toddlers are picky eaters. Being picky about food is a normal behavior for many toddlers but it is also frustrating to every parents. Cyler became a picky eater when we introduced table foods to him. Maybe because his taste buds is not used to tasty foods. As mentioned from my previous post Dra.Vienne recommended an appetite vitamins for Cyler. The name of the vitamin is Mosegor Vita, happy to tell that it was effective to our picky-eater tot. He gained one kilo in just one month compare to the previous month. His food and milk intake increases as well. Now, we don’t need to force him to eat because he eats everything we give him.

Doc Vienne said that we can allow Cyler watch the TV while his eating, if that’s the only way to distract him from eating. We used to turn off the TV when he doesn’t want to eat, we show to him that he cannot watch the TV if he will not eat. Doc said that eating should also be fun to every toddler. She also said that a big mistake parents make is believing their child doesn’t like something because they refused it the first time around. But that first try, the food is new, and your toddler may just be wary. So don’t give up after just one shot. Continue to serve up that new food, and eventually, once it becomes a familiar sight, your tot may venture a taste.

Here are the three things that I learned from dealing with my picky eater toddler.

1. Do not force him to eat. Watch the signs that your baby’s had enough, such as turning his head away. When moms are controlling during feeding, babies are less able to regulate their own intake. Offer your child a variety of nutritious foods and let him or her choose what to eat.

2. Food is fun. Talk to your child while his eating– saying “Yummy!” encourages the baby to eat. And also let him touch the food and use his hands too, experiencing the textures of food is an important part of learning process says SP Maganize.

3. Patience is the key. Be patient, though. It can take up to 15 attempts before your picky eater gets used to a new taste. And even it can take up to one hour before he finishes his meal. Don’t put pressure on your child. Again, eating should be fun. 🙂

Don’t worry if it seems that your child doesn’t eat enough at one meal. Doc Vienne said that if your child has plenty of energy and is growing, he or she is most likely healthy. I am happy because Cyler is gaining more now although he is teething (again). Btw, the best time to give Mosegor vitamins to your child is before bed time because it has sleeping side effects. Cyler slept the whole day when he drink this vitamin for the first time, and so we decided to give it to him before bed time. It also helps him to sleep better at night. And of course, wait for your Pedia’s prescription before giving it to your child.

Motherhood gets tougher when you’re dealing with your picky eater child and motherhood isn’t all we hoped it would be, after all this is what motherhood is all about. Motherhood is hard and wonderful all at the same time. 🙂

A Working Mom’s Dilemma

Nowadays, a working Mom is usual to all of us. Before, mothers are supposed to stay at home and are assigned to take good care of their family but now it’s so hard to do that because of the high cost of living. Both parents need to work in order for the family to survive, of course you want to give the best to your child. And you want to secure your family’s future, sino ba namang may ayaw, diba?! And so, here comes my dilemma as a working Mom. Normally I try to keep my home life to my professional life separate. My Mom used to go here in our house on weekdays to look after Cyler while Cj and I are working. So, that’s are basic set up. Unless my son get sick, our basic set up become a big ‘ol mess.

The sick little baby. 😦

Last Sunday, Cyler gets a high temperature, a 38 degrees stupid high temperature plus a runny nose. It was his first time to have a fever, so we’re clueless why he had a fever then. And then I remember that he is teething again and three molars are peeking through his gums, that’s terrible for a baby. Three molars is no joke.

Our little gum drop, Cyler was having a hard time then but still he was able to manage to play just to forget the pain (at least for a moment).

Cyler has a high tolerance in pain, he doesn’t cry even when he’s not feeling well but I can see how he struggle because he can’t eat and sleep well. And he started to become clingy and irritable. It was Monday and he was still sick, and so I immediately file an emergency leave. On those days, work has to be put on back burner. I texted Dra. Vienne to tell her about Cyler’s condition and I asked her what could be the best thing to do which she responded very quickly. She said that we should continue giving him Paracetamol (for pain and fever) and Disudrin (for colds) for 3 to 4 days. She also mentioned that if the fever subsides and colds clear up, I can discontinue the medicine earlier. And she told me that if the fever persist we should bring Cyler to her. I told her that Cyler is teething again and she said that it can be the cause of the fever. What I really love about Dra. Vienne is that she answers all my queries even thru text, we’re so lucky to have her as Cyler’s pedia. Having a helpful Mom and pedia is really a blessing.I went back to work on Tuesday since my mom was there to look after Cyler and my husband was there too. His sched is more flexy than mine cause he can work from home especially when times get rough for our son. I’m lucky enough to have a mom and husband who graciously step in when my job is too hectic to miss.

His fever subsided last Wednesday, thank God! So, we didn’t bring him to Dra’s clinic anymore. His cold was still there and he got cough also, but it’s not terrible unlike the first few days. And he is totally fine now. Thank you so much, Lord! I O U a bunch!

My company aren’t a monster who refuse to grant a day off or make me feel guilty about taking good care of my child. But there are days when I have a million things to do and I don’t have a choice but to go to work and leave my sick child at home. The guilt feeling was there, really, but I don’t have a choice because I have a deadline to meet. I feel the type of guilt that I would imagine comes with committing a crime. I want to stay at home and take good care of my little one but sometimes I really need to work. Hay. Project deadlines is sometimes a bitch especially when you want to file a leave but your deadline stopping you from doing it. So, that’s one of my biggest dilemma as a working Mom.

There are times when juggling your family life and professional life wasn’t easy especially on those days when you can’t leave your work. Every time that daily routine gets off-balanced, one side of the scale gets neglected and there’s nothing you can do about it. Sick days are just one of those work-life crossovers that muck up the waters for working mom. It’s a good thing that you always have a back-up system around you, like your Mom or your relatives who can look after your sick child especially when your job is too hectic to miss.

I mentioned on my previous post that one of my little boy’s favorite drink was vitamins, yes he likes vitamins so much! Some babies usually have difficulties taking their vitamins, but my son quite enjoys it, though he is a picky eater like his Daddy. Hay. But I don’t complain. Maybe the little boy is not ready to eat something new or maybe he is afraid to go out on his comfort zone.

Anyhoo, here’s Cyler’s initial reaction when I’m about to give him vitamins.

He giggles and get too excited!

He had his monthly check-up with Dra.Vienne today and I mentioned to her that Cyler became a picky eater. She recommended an appetite vitamins to Cyler. Oh-uh vitamins again, I’m pretty sure that Cyler will be happy for this! Geez! The name of the vitamins was Mosegor,  it’s a daily vitamins and he will take this for 3months. This vitamins cost Php800++ pesosososes! My goodness, muntik nakong himatayin sa presyo!  Let’s see the result and I let you know about it. Dra.Vienne said that we’re on same boat cause she also experienced the same thing to her own child. She gave me some tips on how to teach my child to eat but I will try it first then I let you know if it works for this little picky eater. I really hope that this technique will help this little boy to eat some more. *cross finger*

Dear vitamins, sana pagkain kana lang din para kumain ng kumain si Cyler .  🙂

More! More!

Anyhoo, back to my topic I really don’t know why he likes vitamins so much, maybe because he is used to the taste or he likes the orange tangy flavor of his vitamins? Whenever I say “Cyler, here’s your vitamins!”, he giggles and sometimes he grab my hand because off too much excitement.  I’m still glad because he was able to take his vitamins though he is  a picky eater. A picky eater in a good way I say because he likes veggies than sweets. He likes  spinach, broccoli, sweet peas, and squash. Oh well, I just want him to gain more weight. That’s why sometimes I end up forcing him to eat. Sorry, sweetie. Mommy just want to make sure that you are getting enough nutrients for your body needs.

Ummm.. Mommy, no more vitamins? I want some more ! 😛

This is  one of our favorite bonding time with my baby as a newbie mom. And I hope every moms experience the same way too! Having a picky eater child is one of the most challenging part of being a parent but I’m embracing it with arms wide open! I know nag-uumpisa palang ako but I love it and I don’t complain!  🙂

P.S. Friends, if your child is picky eater too and you know some techniques that works to your child.. please, please let me know! THANKS! 🙂

Stupendous Hot Saturday!

Last saturday , we went to Manila Memorial Park at Sucat Parañaque for my AIL (Aunt In Law) Nanay Linda’s 1st year death anniversary. Nanay Linda is my hubby’s fave Aunt, I remember her as a very happy person, she’s very kind and motherly. When I was pregnant with Cyler, she used to tell us that we should bring Cyler at their house gusto niya daw alagaan si Cyler, it’s sad cause she didn’t have the chance to see Cyler anymore. She passed away three weeks before Cyler was born. Anyhoo, I know that she’s happy wherever she is right now.

Moving forward, we brought Cyler with us since it was also his monthly check up. We arrived a bit late (o sige na nga ndi na a bit, late talaga kami), the mass was ended and the guest was eating already. We’re late because we was stocked up in the bumper-to-bumper traffic in Makati (sa presinto nalang daw ako mag paliwanag. Haha!). Anyhoo, it was really a hot summer day but despite of that we was able to kept ourselves cool, especially Cyler. He let everyone carry him and he was so busy entertaining everybody by his counting skills (he say one-chu-chi-poy , it’s one-two-three-four), his other pasikat skills like high-five, align (point-to-point), and by being so talkative the whole time. He didn’t mind the hot weather, which is good but kawawa, deadma lang siya kahit naliligo na siya sa pawis niya. Hay. He wanted to walk the whole time but I insisted, kasi super init talaga at ang tirik tirik ng araw that time kasi tanghaling tapat. Also, we’ve had the chance to catch up with our closest family members, since we hardly see each other due to our hectic schedules. We had a bonding time kahit sandali, I guess yan ang panalo sa lahat!

Here’s some of the photos together with the Ricafort Clan:

Together with my CIL’s

Oiliness lang ang mga peg dahil sa hotness ni haring araw! Gosh! Pero still pretty pa rin.. LOL

This is my CIL Ate Maggie , the mom behind Mommy Maggie Musing’s Blog. We are planning to have a more play date for our little ones, hopefully matuloy para masaya at bongga. 🙂

Ayaw tantanan ni Cyler ung shirt ni Tito Mike nya. Hehe

He was hypnotized by the colorful printed shirt of his Tito Mike (akala niya ata book). HeeHee

Mom-to-Mom heart talk!

We all had a great time and didn’t mind the hot summer weather. 🙂

After the family event, we went to St. Lukes Hospital at The Fort, for Cyler’s monthly check-up. We we’re scheduled at 1pm and we arrived a bit late (tunay na ‘to di kami masyadong late, slight lang talaga. Hehe), cause we left Parañaque at 12:30pm. While waiting for our turn, we went to the Lobby to meet our friend Michelle, they just finished they’re appointment with Dra. I recommended Dra.Vienne to her and I think she really likes Dra. Vienne for her bebe. So far, I didn’t hear any negative feedback from her about Dockie. Btw, If you’re looking for a pediatrician for your bebe, I highly recommend Dra. Vienne to all the Mom’s out there, you know why? Because she’s very hands on to all her patients, very professional, easy to talk with, very accommodating, and kind as well. She answer’s every questions I ask her, even through text and she always give me good parenting advices. You may check her info and sched in this blog post.

This is our friend Mich and her baby Elric.

Cyler, who’s bad smell?

The proud parents 🙂

The rest of the gang.

Anyhoo, we was attended by Dra. Vienne at exactly 2pm. Good thing, we didn’t wait that long. Doc said that Cyler is now ready for table food (Yey!), she also mentioned that we should avoid giving him salty and oily food. Cyler had a varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, Dockie said that this vaccine will protect him from this common childhood disease and its potential serious complications, such as bacterial skin infection. She mentioned that chicken pox is extremely contagious, it spreads very quickly from one person to another person through air. Also, she said that this is the best time to give him the varicella vaccine cause Cyler will be expose to different people on his upcoming birthday party. She also checked Cyler’s height and weight, as well as the circumference of his head. Cyler gained 1 kilo in one and a half months, which is really good. In terms of height, Dra said that Cyler is really tall for his age, sana wag manahin ang height ni Mommy. She noticed that Cyler looks like a little boy now, that gave me goosebumps. Oh well, he’ s growing up so fast but he will always be my baby. Generally, Cyler is a well and active baby. 🙂

Here’s some photos inside the clinic:

Here’s Dra. Vienne Saulog, she’s so pretty, right?! 🙂

Thanks Doc Vienne for making Cyler a very healthy baby.

Cyler was so behave when he was checked by Dra.

After having his chicken pox vaccine, deadma lang sa injection. He was shocked, but he didn’t cry. Good job Cyler!

His fave spot at the clinic and my fave too!

I love the hanging toys inside the clinic. Super cute, diba?!

The animal print are so adorable! Me likey!

Cyler: Daddy put me down. I still wanna play!

Don’t you love the clinic’s interior?! 🙂

Walk, walk, walk all the way!

Yeah! I am now protected by chicken pox!

His monthly check up with Dra. Vienne is always a fun time for him.

More of our Stupendous Hot Saturday on my next post… 🙂

The Tooth Hurts

As early as five months Cyler started teething. We noticed that his gums became swollen and there’s a white spot in the gums area. A week after, when I slide my index finger along his gums I felt something hard. Right there, on the bottom: a tooth! Moving forward, he has now a total of 8 tooth (teeth), and his molars are starting to peek out on his gums. It’s nice to see him building a beautiful smile, but it breaks my heart to see him uncomfortable and in pain. So we asked Dra. Vienne about this, she suggested that we give him paracetamol whenever his in pain especially at night so he can sleep better. Because Cyler is having a hard time sleeping at night when he’s teething. But I’m really glad because he never gets any fever. Also, she suggested that we put his pacifier or teether on the freezer, because colds slightly numbs the area. Sometimes I let him chew his blanket or wash cloth, cause Cyler wants to bite everything. He likes biting me, his daddy and even his lolo and lola. My gulay! But it’s fine, that’s totally understandable. He prefers thumb sucking than using pacifier, I noticed that it become his pain reliever. So I let him do it, besides Dra. Vienne said that it’s fine and it’s normal but she also said that we should stop his thumb sucking habit before he reach 2 years old, it might cause dental problems. I also love thumb sucking when I was a little kid, maybe he got this habit from me. #BakaLangNaman

The Smart Feature article of Smart Parenting July 2011 issue helps me on how to properly care my infant’s teeth. You can follow these tips:
• wipe a clean, wet washcloth over the gums daily. Start doing this even before your baby has any teeth. Personally, I use a cotton in wiping his gums, just cover your index finger with a cotton and put a small amount of water and massage it to your infant’s gums.
• Once a day, polish new teeth with a small, soft toothbrush. Cover it with a tiny smear of flouridated children’s toothpaste. I started using a toothbrush on Cyler’s teeth when he was 7mos. because he has 6 tooth (teeth) already at that time and it became his daily favorite habit. No more pilitan moment for us cause he really loves brushing his teeth.
• Schedule a dental appointment around her first birthday. Now this is my next plan for Cyler.

At 5 months he has 2 teeth already.

At 7 months his front teeth are almost complete (Lakas lang maka-Twilight, nauna kasi yung pangil niya tumubo. Hehe)

And now, no more twilight days.. I mean toothless smile for Cyler! 🙂

Teething is part of every child’s milestone and I am looking forward for his next milestone. 🙂

P.S. Still, the best remedies are hugs and kisses from Mommy and Daddy. 🙂

Finding the Right Pedia For Cyler

Finding Dra. Vienne Saulog is the best thing that I ever made for my little boy. He is Cyler’s 3rd pedia already, ever since Cyler was born I’ve been searching for the right pedia for him. His first pedia was not-so-good, because she doesn’t check Cyler’s thoroughly and she doesn’t give any advices for Cyler’s development. And for me that’s a big NO!NO! So I decided to look for a new one. His 2nd pedia was our cousin’s family pedia. Just like the first one, I am not panatag about her too. My mommy senses tells that I need to find the right one. A someone who will check Cyler’s thoroughly and someone I can ask everything about my son’s development (Hindi ung turok lang ng turok ng bakuna! My gulay!).

One day, my cousin Ate Maggie shared her new blog to me. I read on one of her blog post about Dra. Vienne Saulog. I immediately asked her if Dra. Saulog is an accredited doctor of Maxicare, so we can use Cyler’s health card. She said that Dra is an accredited Doctor of Maxicare. Dra. Vienne has three clinic, one in Paseo de Magallanes, one in St. Lukes Global, and one in Asian Hospital. I like that they allow pre enlisting, perfect for our tight sched. Also, she is highly recommended by most Mommies.

We went to Paseo clinic for Cyler’s first check up with Dra. He was 3 months old at that time. Cyler’s immediately fell in love with the cozy play area. I like the hanging animal toys on the ceiling too. We were scheduled at 4pm and was attended by Dra before 5pm. Not bad, because when it was our turn she was not rushing at all. I was not expecting her to be THAT thorough. She asked that we removed Cyler’s clothes and his diaper so she can check the bikini and anal area. She also ran her fingers to Cyler’s scalp to check if there’s any lymph node. She noticed the white pots on Cyler’s forehead, she suggested that we apply Cethaphil lotion to that area. Also, I told her about Cyler’s dry scalp. She said it’s normal to baby and she suggested that we apply baby oil on the dry area and comb it. She checked Cyler’s height, weight and even the circumference of his head to find if it’s right to his age. She said that Cyler’s weight is just right for his age(as much as possible she doesn’t want the baby to become obese) and she said that Cyler is tall for his age(Sana hindi magmana sa height ni Mommy. Hehe). She mentioned that Cyler’s skills are advanced for his age(Pumalakpak bigla ang tenga ko! Haha!) . She gave us all the details and tips that we needed for Cyler’s development (Actually, hindi nako magkanda ugaga kaka take down ng notes. Haha! ). And she said that Cyler is a well and active baby, so there’s nothing to worry about. 🙂

Now its final, Dra. Vienne Saulog is Cyler’s official pedia. This time its for real! 😀

Btw, Dra. Saulog is so pretty and has a good skin complexion. I wonder what’s her beauty regimen. Umiral nanaman ang ka-kikayan ko daba?!Hihi

Welcome to our family, Dra. Vienne Saulog!
